The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo Grandstand

Interserve has a £10m, five year contract to assemble and dissemble the grandstand

The annual Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo has been running since 1950 and hosts up to 8,800 people each day when it runs for three weeks in August during the Edinburgh festival.

Interserve has been awarded a five year contract extension which begins in 2018 and will run until 2022 for the grandstand provision. This covers the storage, logistics, mobilisation, erection, operation during the shows as well as dismantling of the grandstand. We also install all of the cabins for the VIP units and the technical suite, the WC facilities and the performer’s accommodation.

Works take place on the promenade in front of Edinburgh Castle which has 10,000 visitors a day accessing though an area also used by our contractors.

The grandstand, which sits on the North, South and East of the Castle’s promenade, is a steel- trussed frame structure which is assembled by up to five cranes in a very limited space. Once the frame is up, it is covered with safety nets and a specialist contractor completes the decking and seats which are connected into aluminium risers. The 22 weeks onsite element of this project begins with the 42 day construction period in mid-May. It concludes immediately following the concert and tattoo programme, when the final dismantle element begins which spans 39 days until the end of October. The Grandstand is then returned to a storage facility in Livingston, 20km to the West of Edinburgh.

Stakeholder engagement and co-ordination is a crucial part of this project, with the site team being in daily communication with Historic Scotland, local businesses and the project’s close neighbours. Works are undertaken during restricted times with extra planning and provisions made to overcome any adverse weather.
